All things Militia

How many know that all states are authorized a state military that cannot be federalized. They are called the State Defense Force or State Guard.
All states are authorized to draft their people in times of need. Of course, no one has ever thought of where these draftees would be assigned for training and assignment. Thus, each state legislation voted to have their own State Guard. Some are active and some aren't. TX, GA, & TN are known to have very active units. There are many militias, but they would operate independently and not under the Governor of their state.

Who do you answer to?
Our group leadership which is comprised of community leaders and other citizens in our group. That have gone through our vetting and training process. We only answer to the Governor when a request for support is made. We do the same with our local Sheriffs Department. Our zone lead fields these requests on a local level. All others are through our state leadership. We are not a national organization.

That's kind of the standard practice for State Guard / Militia, right?

IIRC, the cadre for schools like VMI and Citadel can be in the state militia, which is how they get to sport O5 and O6 rank, but with their state name on the fatigues and state abbreviation instead of US. @ThunderHorse ?

We don't call faculty "cadre" at VMI, but all tenure track professors must be enrolled in the VA Militia - Unorganized. It generally aligns under the "National Guard" so they all wear Army Class A's when teaching. If you were a veteran of a different branch you generally will be enrolled in the unorganized militia under that branch of service. There is former major on the Commandant's staff who was promoted to LTC, but wore an Air Force Uniform and instead of US on his uniform it switched over to VA. What branch/job in the unorganized militia are they put in? Generally either Engineers or Adjutant General.

VA also has a State Defense Force that sits under the National Guard as well.

The Dean of Faculty and Chief of Staff are generally One Stars, either by fact of their grade in Active Service or through position which holds a BG commission in the VA Militia (Unorganized).

I was looking pretty seriously at those jobs prior to retiring, that's the only way I'm going to make O6 ;)

In TN the State Guard answers to the NGTAG. Promotions to 0-5 and above has to be approved. They have a BG that sits on the TAGs staff. They were activated during the quarantine, along with the NG. In TN an individual that either retires or is deployed can be buried in the TN Veterans Cemetaries with the rank held and the headstone say US Army.
