Hi everyone,

I am freshman in college and have wanted to join the military for awhile now specifically as a Navy FMF Corpsman. I have been doing a lot of research on this site and have learned a lot and it has helped me to narrow my focus as to what I want to do and what it will be like so I thank all of you a lot for that. Unfortunately, my first meeting with a Navy recruiter today did not go as expected. I'll put the story down here if you would like to read and hopefully give me some much needed guidance. Thanks again.

I met with two Navy recruiters at school today and going into they knew I wanted to be a FMF Corpsman. The recruiter went on to tell me that he cannot guarantee this rate which I knew because of all the medical and physical clearances and other tests I would have to do. I had assumed that if all that was good it would be simple to get a time to go to Basic, then A school, then FMF school however the recruiter went on to tell me that that they are so overstaffed with corpsman that it's almost guaranteed I won't get a chance to do it. I believed him and he started to tell me about different options the Navy offers. However, my friend at school who is a FMF Corpsmen told me that what he said was bullshit because they got classes going through every couple of months. I don't know exactly what to believe now. I don't want to join the military to just join I want to be able to do a combat medicine job and if it's true that open corpsman billets are impossible to find I wont hesitate to see what the Army has to offer with the health care specialists mos. If anyone could give some extra info with Navy Corpsman that would be really appreciated or with any other combat medical job anyone believes I would be better off pursuing if it doesn't work out. Thanks in advance for the guidance.

Welcome.

The Corpsman rate is overmanned and probably always will be. If you want a Corpsman contract all you have to do is wait for one. It is not guaranteed that you will go with the Marines for your first duty station or that you will even get orders to Field Med, but you can increase your chances by having a high GPA so that you can pick orders before your classmates. The truth is that there may not even be any FMF orders for your class to choose from but that's a risk you'll have to take. Feel free to send me a PM.

This is the best job in the Navy.

Yeah sorry about not putting this in the mentor threads I just wanted to get it out quick because I met with the recruiter yesterday and will be starting the paperwork Monday.

Scubadew that's pretty much what my recruiter was saying except that he said even waiting for one is nearly impossible because when a billet opens every job positioner (I think that's what it's called) knows about it and its filled very quickly, so your recruiter has to be really on his game to get you a chance. Although if im able to get a Corpsman contract, being able to get or not get FMF orders is a risk I would be willing to take. Thanks for the help.

Thanks good to be hear. And yes I know it's going to be a challenge but that's what makes it great. It's all about challenging your mind body and spirit. That's actually the motto of the college I am going to.
