Syria Thread

The HTS appears to be leaving the Syrian government intact, which is equally smart and surprising. I'm not sure what happens next but fighting between HTS and the Kurdish SDF seems inevitable. Turkey will likely move to seize Manbij and establish a buffer in Northern Syria. I wouldn't be surprised if Russia backs HTS so they can keep their bases in Tartus and Khemeimim.

Agree....HTS and SDF have a date with destiny. I wonder if the US will back the SDF against a designated terrorist organization.

Or, are we to the point of ... "nah, pass this time"

I hope it's a "sit this one out", pull our troops back, and see what happens.

At some level, it seems Turkey and Israel agreed to throw support behind HTS and they appear to be establishing buffer zones. But Erdogan is as big as piece of shit as there is. That combined with HTS and the new power vacuum, seem to make for a long-term Syrian shit show. Let them sort it out.

Israel supporting jihadis is really dumb. If that is the case, that just destabilizes their own border.

All y'all remember when Obama decided to throw money at the FSA and SDF and truly destabilize Syria which allowed ISIS to take over huge parts of Syria and Iraq...and the stabilizing force of all this wasn't our SF trotters protecting Shell's oil rigs but the Russians propping up Assad? So who were the bad guys there?

I feel like we were the direct cause of a lot bad shit in Syria and Iraq, but hey he was an ally of Putin and Iran so it's ok. Can we like stop doing dumb banana wars shit? These people all have the internet and Hiluxes, it's not 1922 where the American people aren't paying attention.

They've supported Hamas both directly and indirectly since roughly the 70s/80s specifically to undermine attempts at any secular/moderate government from forming, specifically to prevent a two-state plan.

Them supporting Jihadists (if they are) is likely a similar strategy; disparate groups in-fighting are easier to deal with than a united front that might get more international support.

Obama owns this, but he doesn't care.
