HUNTER ARMY AIRFIELD, Ga. (USASOC News Service – CI, Oct. 18, 2007) – Night Stalkers are ready to move into their new high-tech, 90,000 square foot multi-purpose aircraft hangar at Hunter Army Airfield, Ga. The 3rd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment commemorated the hangar’s completion with a ribbon cutting ceremony, October 16. Lt. Col. Walter Rugen, Commander, 3rd Bn., 160th SOAR, Col. Kevin Mangum, Commander, 160th SOAR, and Kewyn Williams, Deputy Garrison Commander, Hunter Army Airfield, did the honors of cutting the ribbon and declaring the hangar ready for use. “This hangar is a representation of our transformation and growth as a Regiment, our increased (mission) commitments overseas and the resulted requirements for a large and increased capacity for fixing our aircraft and training our crews,” said Rugen. “This hangar is a physical manifestation for the valuable support function accomplished here for both our aircrew and aircraft and the folks that seamlessly build and maintain these low density and high demand assets,” he said. Project oversight and construction of the $14 million project was handled by the Savannah District of the Army Corps of Engineers. The facility took nearly two and a half years to complete. The hangar will house a MH-60 Black Hawk helicopter company, half a maintenance company and a flight operations section for the headquarters company. “In a few short weeks, this hangar will be beehive of activity, a place for both the operations and support staff and the aircraft maintenance Soldiers to sweat and toil to get the job done,” Rugen told the audience. “As a fly on the wall you would be amazed at the collective dedication and commitment to sweat the small stuff, getting into the minutest details - literally and figuratively - getting down to the nuts and bolts of doing the job and doing it well.” Rugen knows the Night Stalker team of Soldiers and civilian contractors will spend long days and nights working in this hangar. They will fix aircraft that need to fly now, conduct phase maintenance and deploy special operations rotary wing forces to any number of hotspots around the world. Tasks that are all part of a typical day in the life of a Night Stalker. “For many a young Soldier standing in the crowd today, building 7911 – our newest hangar, will represent a fine career,” he said. “Serving their country, doing and sweating the small stuff, maintaining excellence, doing this nation’s business.” http://news.soc.mil/UNS-CI/News%20stories/Archives/2007/October/071018-01.html HiRes
