Good afternoon, all!
I am a 15T that will be shipping out to attend EGP for my assignment to the 160th SOAR in May, and I have three questions that aren't urgent and don't really pertain to my training or anything like that, they're more so just curiosities.
I am familiar with the organizational structure of the 160th SOAR, with it's Battalion consisting of the Regimental HQ Company and Training Company, and the 4 Aviation Battalions within the regiment. One thing I've never heard of though, is a dedicated Aviation Support Battalion (ASB) for the 160th SOAR. I am familiar with the function of ASBs for ECABs in the Army and USAR/NG aviation, and how they handle depot level maintenance, component repair and supply, fuel and supply logistics, etc.
How does the 160th SOAR handle the need for an ASB? Is it all integrated within the Battalions, or do they have ASBs outside of the 160th, such as those under the 3rd ID at HAAF in GA or those under the 101st at Campbell, that they use as their ASBs? Is there another battalion within the 160th that I am not aware of?
I've heard rumors from non-Night Stalkers that have worked with them that a lot of this capability is done by Civilian Technicians and Contractors at Campbell, and that uniformed servicemembers don't really do this kind of work within the Regiment. However, that is rumors from outside of the regiment that come from sources that are questionable at best, and I don't like rumors, I want facts.
The guys that I do know that either work within the Regiment or used to work within the regiment, state that they don't know the answer and are curious as well (none of them are people that ever really would've worked on depot level maintenance, or weren't maintainers or fliers at all).
My other question, are there any Part-Time (Reserve or National Guard) Units that are closely tied to the 160th SOAR and work with them on a regular basis? I ask this thinking wayyy ahead into the future of my career, for if I ever want to go back to college to finish my degree, or if I ever find myself desiring a slowed down op tempo or needing more family time, but I still desire to contribute to or work with the Regiment.
And my last question, does the 160th SOAR have a plan to adopt the MV-75 (V-280 Valor) in the near future? I am curious to see if that's an airframe I might have the opportunity to serve on. I've seen some of the Army's, Bell and Lockheed's, and SOCOM's developments and statements on developing variants such as the AV-75 (Attack Configuration) and MV-76 (SOCOM Proposition to add a Jet Propulsion Engine and give the Airframe Stealth capability by default).
If any of these happen to be one of those secrets that's best not put out on a public forum, I absolutely understand and will drop it like its hot.
Tl;dr my questions:
1. How does the 160th SOAR handle the need for an ASB (Aviation Support Battalion)?
