I’m surprised the author didn’t mention a famous example of a successful and largely non-SOF stay-behind force, the Aussie and Kiwi coast watchers in the Solomons. They stayed hidden in the jungles and mountains on Japanese occupied islands, utilized natives as scouts, maintained vital comm with allied forces providing real-time intel of Japanese movements and incoming air raids.
