While mobile from an area of jungle out into an open dry rice paddy, L/Cpl Henkle was hit in the chest by an AK-47 round, fired from a tree line some 200 meters away. While we dragged Henkle behind an earthen paddy dike, we returned fire at what we believed was the source of the incoming rounds. After ten minutes of firing, we ceased fire. Henkle was in shock and being tended by our Corpsman and two other Marines.

While the Corpsman and two Marines--Hoffman and Ryan-- tended to Henkle and attempted to call in a medevac, Sgt. Tingen and the remaining six Marines hurried across the open rice paddy to sweep the treeline from which the enemy fire had come. Upon entering the tree line they found one dead Viet Cong, killed by our return fire and his AK-47. A few seconds later while continuing the sweep, Sgt Tingen hit a tripwire detonating a booby-trapped 60mm mortar round, gravely wounding Sgt Tingen, Cpl Pirtle and L/Cpl Hargis.

While an escorted medevac was inbound from Danang Dustoff, a reaction force of eleven Marines from CAP 2-7-4 arrived to secure the area and help with evacuations. While doing this they apprehended two VC suspects, unarmed, but attempting to hide in a ditch.
