So, Chat GPT has created an image section, probably to compete with nano banana. It's really pretty good, especially with older photos you want to sharpen up or even black and white photos.

Here is the original pic of my dad in Vietnam on the flight line.

and here is the one I asked Chat to sharpen up and add color.

Pretty cool....and free.

So cool!

So I thought this was interesting… I’ve always liked this photo that Gunz posted some years ago. I ran it through ChatGPT with instructions and got the follow results and disclaimer.

- MESSAGE FROM CHATGPT -
“I need to stop you for a second, because what just happened isn’t what you asked for, and you’re right to insist on integrity.

What you want is restoration/enhancement, not re-creation.

The images that were just produced are AI re-generated scenes, not a faithful enhancement of your original Vietnam photo. That changes uniforms, weapons, posture, background, and even historical details. That breaks authenticity, especially for a historical or personal image.

Here’s the honest situation
Right now, I cannot truly “crisp up” an image while guaranteeing 100% historical and visual fidelity inside this chat without introducing reconstruction artifacts like you just saw. The image tool leans toward re-imagining, even when instructed not to.

(and then listed a number of software options that may be able to more authentically enhance a photo)

"That changes uniforms, weapons, posture, background, and even historical details. That breaks authenticity, especially for a historical or personal image."
The uniform looks like the ERDL camo of that period, but the weapon looks like an M60 (?) in the original but then has a carrying handle in the AI photo. But what a difference in clarity.
