This summer/fall, I’m considering enlisting into the SOF community via option 40 or 18x. I wanted to get some real thoughts and feedback from people who are not recruiters and who’ve been there and done that. Forgive any misunderstandings I may have, I’m just starting to do my research, and this seemed like a good place to get some more pieces to the puzzle.
I’m going to have a bachelors in Electrical & Computer Engineering from a top state university when I graduate in a month, but I’m not entirely certain what to do with it. All jobs that pertain to my areas of expertise are across the country, and they are limited at the current moment in time. I don’t have any capital for startup ventures yet, and quite frankly school has me bored and burnt out. My favorite things I’ve ever done are practicing MMA, playing high school football, and racing dirtbikes. I would imagine that service in a high tempo unit would be like this on steroids, with the agression and team atmosphere. With that being said, I do want to be an engineer eventually and have a family. This is not something that I’d want to do forever.
I’m in top shape strength + power wise, but am heavy right now and understand I’d need to lose a bit of weight and reshape my cardio and endurance, which I know how to do. Any testing is not a concern to me, I had a 1590 on my high school SAT and I assume it would translate to any standardized testing administered.
Would it be wise to consider enlistment in my place, or would you recommend against it? The experience seems like it would be transformative and make me a better man than I otherwise would be, also letting me spend my youth in a manner that I can’t later. If so, what is the best route? The fast track to service and emphasis on combat tactics in the ranger pipeline is appealing, but so is the cerebral nature of the 18x route. Again, this is new territory for me so forgive me if I’m blatantly misunderstanding or trivializing some important details.
