Fake papers accepted in academic journals: I thought we had a thread about this but nothing turned up in a site search.

Here is the latest iteration: Watch: Steven Crowder Infiltrated A "Fat Studies" Conference And Had A Bogus Academic Paper Accepted 😂

I don't want this to devolve into a partisan political argument, so please don't respond with any comments degrading academics or progressives. I'm sure if we looked hard enough we'd find fake papers published in conservative outlets as well. I'm posting this as a reminder that "experts" of all types almost always also have an agenda, and that you should always critically consider everything you read or hear, no matter the originator and no matter the publisher.

Also, Steven Crowder makes a pretty hideous fake woman...

I’m writing my doctoral thesis now. It is straight up not a good time. I absolutely hate every second of writing, and honestly would rather do anything other than this.

I’ve often thought about going for a doctorate but then I ask myself why do I want it other than the title to show myself that my errors of my youth don’t define me. Then I remember what you wrote and say nope. lol

Very true.

In my profession, someone randomly decided to make a doctorate the entry level requirement, for basically no reason. I don’t want one, but have to have one. It is the worst.

Actually I take this back, I don’t want to write a thesis/do a project. I do want the hour requirement and the extra year of practice that the doctorate conveys.

Better to get it over with at the start, it will be more and more of a requirement to do anything besides direct anesthesia care in our profession.

Not to mention the expense.

Outside of an academic hospital, unless you want to going to leadership or teach, is still a crock of crap. Don't get me started on our profession and degrees.

My boss wants me to get my doctorate. The university will pay for it, so that's not a problem. But it probably won't make me any more money once I get it, and that is a problem. At 53, almost 54, and having gone through what I have in the past six, seven months, I'm not into adding more to my plate.

But I co-authored a really good paper about sham academics and problems with inability to validate research in papers.*

*No, not really, I just made that up.....

Well at least in my discipline (adult education) it makes sense. With the clinical disciplines (anesthesia, nurse practitioner, nurse midwife, clinical nurse specialist), it makes much less sense.

And should you decide to cross the street to the pretty buildings on Trent Drive, you know how much more you make with that doctorate? You will lose money, significantly, if you want to teach. ESPECIALLY in anesthesia.

Considering how thoroughly Crowder stepped up the hoax studies game by showing up to present in drag and prosths - uncontested - after receiving an invitation to speak at a fat studies conference all as a non-academic, this more than qualifies for the distinction 'Sokal Cubed'.
