Hey gang,

Just introducing myself. I'm an 11b in the Massachusetts National Guard, looking to switch gears from slow speed to something a little more high speed. Currently an E-4, I should be heading to my State's SFRE in March. I'm just looking for the best amount of guidance and prep I can get beforehand.

Physically speaking I'm in okay shape. I have a 300 APFT score, but barely (right on the money in push ups, only one extra sit up, and a 12:40 run time). My five mile run time is 37:48, and I took a ruck march myself recently to gauge myself - 4 miles in 57:30.

I'd like to be more confident in land nav, if anything. I understand how to do it, and did fairly well down in basic training (the last time I did land nav). But it still felt like a crapshoot, even if I found all the points. Felt a lot like luck.

Anyway, looking for any guidance and help. SFRE is March 23rd weekend.

Since we try to keep intro threads for just that, "intros and welcomes", I'd recommend you start a thread on the topic for any ideas/help on this. In the meantime, if you are near an REI in your state:

Map and Compass Navigation Basics 2/07/18 - Reading REI Classes & Events

I like to solo camp and have taken many of their classes. Always find them to be professional and well run.

Welcome.

If you pass any serious land nav course with that little amount of prep time, you should bottle your technique and sell it.

Good luck.

Wow this is AMAZING. I had no idea REI did this sort of thing.

Thanks a ton for this. I just scheduled 3 classes leveling up from beginner to intermediate.

This is why I came to this forum!
