Hello everyone:

I joined this site to learn about trying out for TACP and to get advice from the experienced guys here, any advice would be greatly appreciated. A little about me: Did 4 years active duty Navy, as an electrician, was deployed twice to the Persian Gulf, once for operation Enduring Freedom, also deployed to Puerto Rico, Spain, Ireland, Greece, Italy and many more. Got out in 2002 then joined ANG in 2013 as an Avionics Comm/Nav. Interested in cross training to TACP in the Guard.

Welcome, shipmate. Make sure Illinois ANG has a TACP unit. Its not available everywhere. But you could easily get that answer from a recruiter.

Hey Shipmate !!! yes there's an ANG TACP unit in Peoria, Il. the only problem is, it's about a 4 hour drive for me, one way! :)

Shipmate, IMHO, its worth the drive if you want the job. I drove from Laredo, TX. to Austin, TX. every month for 3 years just for drill. That was a 3.5-4 hr drive depending on traffic. I had a good unit out there and we did some fun stuff so it was well worth it, also the wife enjoyed leaving Laredo for the weekend and spending some alone time around Austin. Anyway, glad there is a unit there you should definitely do it.

Thanks a lot everyone, I actually talked to a recruiter at Peoria, Il. a couple weeks ago, bu the told me that I would have to sign up with Peoria's unit before I could take the PAST, and if I didn't pass it then I would pretty much stuck there since Peoria does not allow transfering to other units at the moment. Does anybody know if there's place were I could take the PAST before I sign a contract? The other issue I had with the same recruiter was about the PAST, he explained to me that the situps/pushups test were 2 minutes, meaning I would have to perform the situps/pushups for the whole 2 minutes even if I had already done the minimum requiered, if I stopped before the 2 minutes I'd be disqualified; is it this way everywhere?

Welcome

Why would you want to just do the minimum? Go balls to the wall for a full 2 and see if you can go beyond the max - uh... if I were you I'd be checking that attitude as a TACP unit is not interested in someone who just does the minimum and quits. Emphasis on that last word - the only way to have it in your mentality is coupled with never.

Just do what Red-Dot tells you to do.
Talk to the unit and let them administer an unofficial PAST test.

LL: I never said I wanted to do just the minimun; I was just trying to explain how the PAST is implemented at Peoria ANG. In my last pt the minimun was around 40 push ups, but I didn't stop, I kept going and did 61, and the minimum sit ups were around 40 maybe, but I kept going and did 54, so I can assure you my attitude is not that of a quitter or some one that does only the minimum.

Welcome to the site. My ASOS required you to pass a PAST test before allowing an enlistment, so the Peoria unit may have the same policy in place. If not, there's nothing stopping you from running an unofficial one on your own.

Clarity in writing is a very good trait to develop.
