Hello all, my name is Gabe and I'm currently in the process of joining the military. I went to college for 2 and a half years after graduating high school and decided that I want to enlist in to the military. I am really interested in both a physical and mental challenge and want to find a job that will challenge me in every possible way. I recently went to MEPS and took the ASVAB and did very well. After talking to recruiters from each branch I decided that I wanted to pursue TACP in the Air force. However, when I went to take my physical about a month and a half ago I didn't pass the depth perception test at MEPS. I went to a civilian eye doctor and took numerous test and passed them all and they wrote a note saying that i did indeed have depth perception. My waiver was denied so I am not allowed to retest at MEPS which puts me back at square one. I'm suppose to go back to MEPS next Friday to swear in, but now unsure of which direction I want to go. Any help would be much appreciated and thank you very much for your time!

Welcome to SS. With TACP seemingly out of reach for you, does that mean you have no interest in the military? The choices in the military today, are wide, challenging, and demanding. You have, at this site, a great deal of information to read and process. Take your time, and read through the threads, that will position you to ask informed questions of the experts. Today's military expects a great deal from all it's members, and I wish you the best in your quest.

Thank you all for the welcome! Red-Dot I talked to a recruiter and there's not much that can be done at this point in regards to TACP. Only hope I have of joining TACP would be to enlist in to another job and get my depth perception overturned while in then cross-train at a later date. Red Flag, yes I am still very interested in joining the military. I'm still planning on going Friday to swear in and prepared to do whatever job is available to me. If anybody has any suggestions for me please let me know! I'm interested in everything, but not very mechanically minded so hopefully won't get a job in that field. Once again, thank you for the welcome!

I think you are going to enjoy the military. I applaud your stepping up and joining, so few see the real picture and take the step you are about to. So, best of luck, and keep us posted on things.

Welcome.

Hey guys, went to MEPS yesterday and am now officially sworn in to the Air Force DEP program. I had to pick 9 jobs and an open field so I picked a few different intel and cyber jobs and a few random jobs such as contracting. I also had to pick an open fields such as open mechanical, electrical, and general so I went with open general. However, Combat Control and Pararescue were on my sheet and I am highly considering signing up for CCT. I am very motivated for special forces, but I'm very concerned about the immense amount of swimming involved in CCT training. With TACP swimming wasn't a big issue, but after reading up on CCT I will have to improve my swimming dramatically before going in. I'm going to start training Monday in the pool and try to get my 500 meter time down so I can hopefully pass the PAST test if I decide Combat Control. If anyone has any advice for me please get in touch!

Work on the pool as much as you can, a lot of it has to do with technique. I went from barely being able to do the 500m at all to completing it in 9:33 two weeks later just because I had changed my technique based on the advice of someone more experienced than I. Hopefully you'll get what you want , but even if you get force into something you don't necessarily want, keep your eye on the prize and keep training so that when the time comes you will be ready for a retrain, should it come to that. Side note, Air Force is Special Operations, as Special Forces is specific to the US Army.

Thanks very much for the advice xGenoSiide! Wasn't aware of the Special Operations versus Special Forces difference, but thanks for notifying me. I take the PAST test Friday for CCT so am going to spend all week working on the 500m and underwater swims so hopefully I can get it down before Friday.
