This is big news here as it is very rare that a Police Officer is shot and killed here. The gang which is looking more likely as a criminal gang rather than "terrorists" .. lured him closer and shot him point blank with a shotgun.. RIP Garda Donohoe.

THE GARDAÍ HAVE acknowledged the “huge amount of support” they have received in the aftermath of the shooting dead of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe last Friday.
A further appeal has also been issued for information about the shooting with details of a burned-out car located in south Armagh yesterday released.
The car is currently undergoing a technical examination but it is not yet known if it was involved in the crime.
Donohoe was shot dead by armed robbers at the Lordship Credit Union in Bellurgan, Jenkinstown near Dundalk in Co Louth on Friday night at around 9.30pm.
So far no arrests have been made and the investigation continues.
Over 100 gardaí are now working on the case with specialist national and regional units involved.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland is also assisting in the inquiry and gardaí have issued a specific appeal to anyone who:
  • Observed suspicious activity in the vicinity of Lordship Credit Union between 6.30pm and 9.30pm last Friday, 29 January.
  • Saw a dark coloured car leaving the scene of the shooting that was driving in an erratic manner and heading towards Ravensdale roundabout in the general direction of Dundalk, close to the M1 motorway.
  • Who saw a Volkswagen Passat which was located burned-out on the Keady to Newtownhamilton Road in Co Armagh yesterday morning.

It is understood that detectives in Dundalk believe known criminal gangs are more likely than dissident republicans to be responsible for the murder of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe.

The on-duty garda was shot dead outside the Credit Union in Jenkinstown, Co Louth on Friday night.

Minister for Justice Alan Shatter said it was not yet known who had carried out the killing, but that "all possibilities are being considered".

The scene of the shooting remains sealed off this morning as gardaí continue their investigation.

Close friend Alan Duffy said detective Donohue would be greatly missed. He described his friend as a "gentle giant, a very nice person, very confident, honest, reliable and hard-working".

He said: "He died protecting people in this community…The callousness and evil of (those responsible) doesn't bear thinking about."

He added his friend's death was "a sad tragedy and a huge loss".

Gardaí investigating the murder of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe have said every possible resource will be used in bringing the perpetrators to justice.

Garda Commissioner is Martin Callinan said: "There are up to four people involved in the actual raid. How many were involved beyond that remains to be seen.

"We will put all our energy towards finding out precisely who was behind this robbery…Resources will not be an issue."

He added that "many, many people were working on the investigation through the national units assisting the local gardaí, (as well as) the special detective unit and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation".
