Iwo Jima in color (not colorized)

The unique thing about Iwo Jima is that it was a panoramic battlefield, a spectacular epic, like a movie. With a good pair of binoculars sailors aboard ship could watch the battle unfold.

I find that fascinating. I can't think of any other battlefield of WWII that was so visible in its entirety.

That aerial shot of Suribachi and the waves of amtracs heading toward the beach, the explosions, dust and smoke...surreal.

Thanks for the pictures...my grandfather was aboard a Destroyer Escort there...he recorded his battles in his Blue Book.

The color adds a depth of reality to it, unlike the black and white photos that we have seen a million times. Uncommon valor was a common virtue.
