Hi all. I've lurked here for a while before registering, and will likely continue to lurk here for a while before I become an active poster- there's a lot to learn
But I figured I'd go ahead and say hi right away.
I'm a former Marine infantry squad leader, served 2003 to 2008. Got out as a Sergeant after three tours in Iraq (OIF 2-2, 5-7, and 6-8), left to pursue a degree with vague idea of joining the intelligence community. Honestly, I didn't have a master plan of any kind. I was frustrated with the Marine Corps at the time and wanted to get laid while I got a degree and come back in a capacity where I felt I could make more of a difference.
Fast forward 6+ years, I have my degree in my desired field, but I'm working as an IT project manager at a big corporation. I put my plans on hold to take care of immediate matters- i.e. my wife and two kids, ages 5 and 2. Family life is stabilizing now, and I am ready to resume my plans and get out of the corporate doldrums. The change is that, as I've done more an more research, I don't think the IC was what I thought it was when I set the dream. I imagined a lot more gunslinging and a lot less report writing. I'm not the brightest, apparently.
Anyway, as a grunt, my love was ALWAYS for the raids. They were why I couldn't wait for deployments. UW is awesome, but my heart has always been in direct action. With that said, I am very strongly considering joining the Army as an infantry officer and doing all in my power to make my way over to a Ranger battalion as a platoon leader. I've been using this board to learn all I can, and will continue to do so.
TL;DR- former USMC grunt, want to be a platoon commander, maybe eventually a company commander in a Ranger Battalion.
Thanks!
