Hello all, I'm a West Point Class of 2018 Cadet Candidate. I am hoping to get accepted to the Academy and graduate as a 15A Aviation Officer. My ultimate goal is to select for the 160th SOAR(A) as a Blackhawk pilot. In the event that I am not accepted to the Academy, I have already made a number of connections with some of the best Army ROTC programs in the state. Any insight into USMA, AROTC, SOAR, Aviation, officership, etc, is greatly appreciated. I look forward to participating in these forums are learning from those who have gone before.

So you'd start in 2014? When do you find out whether or not you have been accepted?

There are MANY people on this site with a connection to either West Point or the 160th.

That is correct. I graduate high school in 2014 and, in the event that I am accepted, I would be reporting for CBT that summer. I find out if I'm accepted around January/February next year.

What ROTC programs are you considering?

I live in California, so I naturally scouted out some of the more local campuses. I emailed the LTCs commanding the ROTC programs at UC Davis, UC Berkeley, and UCLA. In a nutshell, Davis was indifferent to my email, Berkeley seemed interested and offered to help me with my West Point app, and LA invited me down to attend a Cadet field exercise as well as have an extended tour of the campus with the Colonel as my tour guide. Their complete hospitality, along with the fact that I have a sister at UCLA, is really leaning my interest in their direction.

My advice...get out of California (I'm from the Southern part). In regards to the Academy, I'm a VMI grad, do I say go there? No but get getting a scholarship or contract there isn't tough because it's an SMC and you get automatic active duty if you want it.

Edit: That makes it sound easy, but it was a tough life.
