SEAL killed in demo jump during NYC Fleet Week

I read this last night, and then again this morning:

Video taken by ABC station WABC-TV showed part of the parachute coming down after the parachutist separated from his chute and landed in the water.

Both articles state that he "cut away" from his chute. Those of you who jump, what possible scenerio could you encounter where you would feel the need to sepeate yourself from your chute prior to landing?

Would he have been hoping to overshoot the landing and take his chances with a water landing?

@AWP will know.

But I'm fairly certain that one cuts away the main chute in order to deploy the reserve.

No. If your main malfunctions and you can't resolve the problem, then you cut it away and deploy your reserve. Both parachutes are on your back, so the malfunctioning canopy has to go in order to provide clear air for the reserve.

Blue Skies.
