The Navy, she's a'growin.....

This is the Indo-Pacific PRC containment chess game at work, and to do it effectively you need a big Navy. China will make moves of its own to counter everything we do, like dredge up man-made islands. That tactic is reminiscent of Imperial Japan's "unsinkable aircraft carrier" island defense lines of WW2.

Using islands as unsinkable carriers is fine, except the enemy always knows where to find them.

I'm cool with a big Navy but I don't think we will ever go shit-hot full-bore war-to-the-hilt with the PRC. We're getting into more of a cold war posture there, where everybody spends big on muscle as a threat and deterrent but nobody actually pulls the trigger.

I wish I could double like your post, because I think that you hit the nail right on the head.

Due to the overall incompetence of the previous political administrations, the US now has to deal with this maritime mess that the damn Chinese are making. What kills me is that the PRC should never have had the ability to project itself into international waters, but for some reason we let them get away with this and so much other shit it's insane.

I get the feeling that there are going to be alot of small scale brushfire conflicts, backed by the Chinese and their intermediaries, before the PRC makes their grand move.

Unless they learn how to drive their boats, that number won't matter. What's the point of expanding the fleet when it has other internal issues to address?

Well, the PRC is putting long runways, radar, deep port facilities and fortifications on these reclaimed islands...and extending their maritime reach...which is making everybody else in the region nervous and looking to buddy-up defensively. Nobody better to buddy-up to than a robust Pacific Command.

Provided, as @AWP says, they learn to not crash into things...or take baksheesh from guys like Fat Leonard.
