They were buying iron ore from us at a phenomenal rate and turning it into cities, ramping up their manufacturing of electrical goods, steel, fertiliser, cement, developing a surging middle class.

This was right after and around the whole YEN-carry trade debacle that helped leave them in stagnation. I didn't watch the video yet, but I unless it tries to normalize currencies and values, this most definitely plays the part.

The surge commenced in 2001, the same week as 9/11 as China joined the WTO. The CCP understood that it had to get serious to become a global power. But due to that unfortunate events of 9/11 it was largely missed by the world at large.
