WASHINGTON — The U.S. Air Force will award the Silver Star to Chief Master Sgt. Ronald
Brodeur and Sergeant Eric Roberts II, both part of a helicopter crew shot down in Duc Lap, Republic
of Vietnam, on February 20, 1969.
Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh III will present the medal to the Vietnam veterans
during a ceremony at the Pentagon, December 17 at 2:30 p.m.
Sergeant Brodeur and Sergeant Roberts will receive the medal for their “gallantry and devotion
to duty” for actions taken when their crew was called upon to rescue a six-man Long Range
Reconnaissance Patrol while being surrounded and “in danger of being overrun by a numerically
superior hostile force”.
Media wishing to attend the ceremony should contact Air Force Public Affairs no later than 4
p.m. Dec 16. Journalists without a Pentagon building pass should arrive no later than 45 minutes prior
to the event at the Metro entrance with proof of press affiliation and two forms of photo identification.
