Late last year a 20-day urban fighting took place in southern PH. Some 500+ fully armed hardcore jihadist insurgents sieged a city and held civilians as hostages. PH military was able to take back the city and rescue the hostages. The result: 20 PH soldiers KIA, 200+ insurgents KIA, 200+ insurgents captured, and the PH flag was raised once again in the city capital.

Conditions: "mano-a-mano" urban fighting for 20 days non-stop, no CAS, sheer improvisation and common sense.

This soldier took a ricochet in the jaw, went back to his team and fought again the next day. A few days later he took a round in the neck and was mortally wounded. He was posthumously given the highest PH combat award, the medal for valor.

This photo was kind of iconic to me coz it screams "We're here to take back the city!"
