I really have trouble seeing much value in this youtube grade video, of a highschool student implanting a piece of metal in his finger. This is not "Bad assed", it is the other option you suggested.
I don't recommend folks doing this minor surgical procedure at home. The risk of infection and complications including the loss of a finger are real.
