Airmen train with Marines for urban warfare
1/25/2007 - CAMP HANSEN, Okinawa (AFNEWS) -- Camp Hansen Marines recently taught sniper tactics to two Airmen from the 36th Contingency Response Group from Andersen Air Force Base, Guam.
The 3rd Marine Expeditionary Forces Special Operations Training Group on Camp Hansen offers courses designed to enhance the training of servicemembers preparing for operations downrange.
One such program is the Urban Sniper Course, where operations in urban terrain often call for snipers as part of the operating force.
The course is designed to relate the things the students have already learned into more practical situations, said Master Sgt. Deryck Dervin, the chief instructor of the Special Missions Branch.
"The course is set up to take their skills they have learned in their basic school and apply those same skills, but in an urban environment," Sergeant Dervin said.
One of the two Airmen, Tech. Sgt. Samuel Howell, said he felt confident the Marine training had better prepared him for whatever the future may bring.
"They have been doing it a lot longer than the Air Force has," Sergeant Howell said. "Watching them out here training and working together shows us what we need to do on our end to keep up with them."
