I am going for an arson investigator position with the state fire marshal. Are there any arson investigators on the board that can offer some insight on how to prepare? I looked at the IAAI for some professional education and I'm taking an arson investigator course at AMU. Other than that I don't know what else to do or look into. Any help is appreciated.

Check out www.teex.com as well, I believe they still have a couple of arson investigation courses.

I was actually looking at them a year ago, looking into the insurance fraud investigation side.

Post what you learn and what course you end up taking/liking. I've always been interested in investigation and still may try to get into the private sector. Its helpful to know where everyone is getting the best training, etc.

Good luck with the Fire Marshal gig, I think that would be a cool as shit job.

Thanks! I'll check it out. The IAAI site firearson.com also has some professional courses that looked really good. The LT at the SFM told me there investigators are required to take those courses as well. The only problem is it is not cost effective to not be an IAAI member when taking the courses. It's cheaper to join than take it independently. I will let you know what looks good. Thanks again!

So did you ever get the position? Trying any other fire cop jobs, or is this a thought of the past?
Holy resurrected thread Batman! lol I didn't get the position, but another opened up earlier this year and I applied for it. I made it through the first round and am waiting to hear the results of the oral board. There aren't many arson investigator positions in my area as the state is the one responsible for investigating them now. A few positions remain with various fire agencies, but they generally aren't sworn and are dwindling since the state is taking the primary role. Thank you for the interest though. This job is still the dream job to have for me so I will keep trying if I don't get it this go around.
