FORT BRAGG, N.C. (USASOC News Service, Oct. 28, 2008) – A husband, father and comrade was remembered for his inspiring service to the nation at a memorial service today, at Faith Community Chapel here.

Maj. Robert D. Lindenau of the 91st Civil Affairs Battalion, was remembered for giving the ultimate sacrifice in combat for a mission he loved and cherished.
The walls of Faith Community Chapel could not hold the outpour of lives that Lindenau touched. People stood in the vestibule and outside the chapel to pay respects to a man who loved all.

Lindenau is survived by his wife, Tonya, and their four children, Rachel, Gabe, Sarah and Hannah currently of Fort Bragg, N.C. Lindenau, 39, was born in Seattle.

When asked one word to describe her husband, Tonya Lindenau responded, “Good.”

This simple term encompassed Lindenau and what others thought of him.

“Bob was truly one of the nicest people you could ever meet,” Maj. Danford Bryant, commander of Company D, 91st Civil Affairs Battalion (Airborne), 95th CA Brigade said in an eulogy that expressed Lindenau’s passion for people.

“He had faith in humanity. He had a deep belief that even in the most desperate times, in the most hostile of locations, in the places of deepest despair, the human spirit only needs a little spark to begin the flame of hope. And with hope, he believed all persons can achieve a better life,” Bryant said.

“Bob loved his family. He loved his teammates, Hulio, Freddy and Gill. He loved his mission,” said Bryant. “And along the way, people loved Bob.”

Bryant ended his eulogy, asking everyone to remember and reflect on the Lindenau family, and raise a pint for Lindenau as he would have wanted.
As the ceremony came to a close, the crowd’s only solace was in Lindenau’s memory. Tears fell, prayers whispered and a proud salute was a final good-bye to Maj. Robert D. Lindenau.
