I learned the nitty-gritty of this from some ex-pat buds when I was in Central America in the mid-80's. One of the top rules was: always look poor but intimidating.

When I started at my current job there were a few attempted abductions of some nurses/female employees so we had a similar course. It was pretty good. I recall the guy that owned the company and taught the course was former CIA and taught this, SA, gray man stuff to CIA people.
