*UPDATE* Was advised it was ok to post the link after someone read over it.

www.fas.org/sgp/crs/natsec/R43355.pdf‎

What are your thoughts on this?

I was recently forwarded a copy of a report by "---" about the structured draw down, possible restructuring/roles of the Marine Corps in the upcoming years and it's mission possibly 'shifting' in capacity in light of the recent decade longs war in Iraq/Afghanistan. I'd be interested in what some of you have to say on it and will gladly post a link to it but do not want to violate opsec.

After some quick research, it appears the "---" is a public domain 'think-tank' producing reports to clearly define issues in a legislative context, but are often not made directly available to the "public". Often times they are leaked by congressional clients.

Thoughts about posting up the link to read the research? None of it is classified material, however, most of this stuff can only be seen by the public by requesting it and even then, it's not guaranteed your request will be accepted. It will definitely affect all those is the Marine Corps (all MOS, AD and RESERVISTS) as well as Army personnel so I want it to be read but only to those in the "need to know" circle.

Go/No Go?

The link you posted didn't work.

I'm deeply suspicious of any link to an FAS document related to "natsec," which means "national security." Typically those kinds of documents are conspicuously marked something other than "UNCLASSIFIED." If the document you're talking about is marked anything higher than that, we're not going to be discussing it in any form on this site.

Freefalling's link worked.

I'm a big fan of CRS reports, in no small part because, like enceladus noted, they're UNCLASS.

I didn't see anything in that report that we can't talk about here.

It seems like some of these plans and discussions will leave us spread too thin to be effective at anything, particularly as we cut the number of infantry battalions and other supporting units during a time when there are some areas/groups/countries we need to be focusing on. It's ok though, I'm sure all the money we are spending to install the new camera systems in the barracks will keep us safe at night.
