Hello all,
I am currently a high school senior from California. I will be attending college next year, I have been accepted into an Ivy and have a spot on their lacrosse team. I know it is pretty early to be posting here with my goal of military service still 5 years from now, but I have applied for a NROTC scholarship and that is pushing forward decisions about my career path. If I am awarded the scholarship it is likely I will only take it for the first year because enlisting will give me more control over my specific job/ MOS. I also have a desire to be in combat as opposed to a more administrative role (not that all officers are like that but it seems to be a fact that enlisted soldiers see more combat). I was originally planning on going for SEALs, but there are no other jobs in the Navy I want so if I do not complete BUD/s I am somewhat screwed. I have been doing more research on Marine Recon/MARSOC/Scout Sniper and really like the way one progresses into a Special Operations career. Right now I hope to enlist with a Recon contract and just keep my head down and work hard to get the best training I can. I will see where my path goes from there, hopefully to scout sniper school and then MARSOC, but I first and foremost want to be a successful Recon Marine. I know the path is long and difficult, but in the end very rewarding. Thank you all for running such a great forum full of information that makes my choices far easier, and thank you for allowing me to join.

Welcome to ShadowSpear!

Above all things...strive to be the best Marine that you can be. The rest will fall in to place.

Welcome.

If you are only going to take a NROTC scholarship for one year, then enlist.... let someone who will use the entire scholarship have it. with the wording of your post, I'd be very hesitant to have you on my team, for reasons of honor. If you want to enlist, enlist. If you want to be an officer, take the scholarship. Taking the scholarship for a year, then enlisting is selfish and self serving.

Sorry I should clarify. I do not want to take the NROTC scholarship if I do not need it. I will only take it if I am not given enough financial aid. There is only a very slim chance of this, and I may not even attend the school I am selected to get the scholarship at because I may get a full ride at another good school for my grades. And I will only not take the scholarship for the rest of the years if I cannot get a SEAL slot out of college. Also, correct me if I am wrong, but if I do not take the scholarship for the 3 other years doesn't it go to another NROTC student who is applying for it while in college? If this is not true and I am taking away from another student then I will not only take it away from another candidate. I apologize if I came across as selfish.

Welcome.

If you truly are good enough to be recruited by Cornell and the likes of other great schools in Division 1, 2 or 3.. Use that to get yourself to those schools. This is conditioned on if you have the grades to back up your athleticism. Choose a school based on where you will be happy, not what sounds good to say. Be realistic. If you are not going to be happy at a school, everything else will suffer and you will eventually fail out, scrape by, or transfer.

I've been a student-athlete in college, played lacrosse. It's not a cake walk and I'm telling you to make sure academics comes first. Don't waste 5 years of school and major in something useless. Yes. Plan on it taking more then four years to get a four year degree as a student-athlete. Lacrosse has a great community to be a part of and you will make friendships/acquaintances that will last your life.

Enjoy being around a lot of Long Islanders no matter where you choose to play lacrosse. We are everywhere in the lacrosse community.
