I am in my final semester of school where I am majoring in Arabic and Islamic Studies. I am a non-traditional student as I chose to foolishly pursue a baseball career after high school. Because of this, I will be 26 years old when I finish in May.

I have worked full time during the last three years while finishing my degree. Most recently I have been working as a Middle East media researcher.

I am interested in enlisting in the military after I graduate. I am very interested in an 18x contract but due to a minor surgery (waiver-able), I am unable to receive that contract. I am now looking at pursuing a 35P contract (I have passed the DLAB) with hopes of becoming a part of the SOF community in a support role.

As for my immediate goals: They are to finish school, get through the waiver process at MEPS and begin my journey of BCT, AIT, DLI, and hopefully I will get the opportunity to join a SOT-A (but I am not even worrying about that until I get through my initial goals first).

I am here mostly to learn about SOT-A and other support roles, as well as just take in as much info as possible. The site has already given me a wealth of info and I only created a membership in the rare instance where I would like to ask a question that has not already been asked.

"Exhibit A" for a good intro post.

Welcome. Lots of people here have experience on the enabler side of SOF. You should not hesitate to draw upon their expertise... AFTER you have executed due diligence and research on your own.

If you can't do 18X, why are you enlisting instead of maybe doing the officer route?

Welcome to the site. Why do you say that your attempt to pursue a baseball career was foolish? Being only 26 and having a degree is a good spot to be in.

Thank you all for the warm welcome.

@ CDG: It was foolish in the sense that I spent three years pursuing something that in hindsight was probably not going to happen (make the big leagues). Earning my degree is something that I am very proud of but if I had been a little more reasonable, I would be three years ahead of where I am now.

@ Marauder06: I have looked into the possibility of going the officer route via OCS but have decided it may not be for me. It seems the opportunity of ever getting the chance to be a part of Special Forces as an officer is pretty slim (though I only know what I read and could be wrong). However, I do enjoy languages a great deal (I have studied Arabic for 3.5 years). From what I understand, I can enlist as a 35P, get to refine my Arabic, or even learn a new language, have the opportunity to support Special Forces and get to do a job that I really enjoy for many years. At least that is my basis for wanting to pursue the enlisted path vs the officer route.

Thanks Again,

NovaRob
