Hello,

Long time browser, first time poster here. I'm currently active duty in the Marine Corps and stationed in Okitraz. There's a few different routes I'm looking into if I decide to re-enlist, and this site has a lot of knowledgeable people and good information so I figured it was time to sign up.

Glad to be apart of the community and hopefully I can learn a thing or two.

Thanks!

Welcome Marine. My suggestion to make Oki better...get out and meet some locals. I hated Oki until I networked in with the locals and got into diving etc. There's a ton of stuff to do out there once you get over going to the local bars every night.

Thanks for the advice but unfortunately with the liberty restrictions right now it's hard to even get off base to do anything. We're not even allowed to drink off base anymore. I even have my 'gold card', which you'd think would lift some of the restrictions, but it really doesn't. Just have to keep hoping that eventually they will start letting us do stuff again.

And to everyone else - thank you!

Wow. Just wow. I had to Google Okitraz (thinking what the fuck country is that???). The atomosphere has certainly changed over there, even as a Lance Corporal (this was 90-93')there were no base restrictions and we ALL had cars. Incentive to extend for additional tours on the rock were 30-days leave and a round-trip flight. I stayed 3 1/2 years. Scuba, Uechi Ryu, and A-Sign...ahhh, A-Sign.

Sad that things have gotten so out of hand that you can't even get a chance to get out to BC Street and donate your paycheck to a sweet Philipino lass who's only desire is for you to purchase her a simple drink....every 15 minutes.

Welcome.

I was in the Marines but stationed on Kadena AFB out in Oki for two years and had a freaking blast. We had zero restrictions and took care of each other to keep it that way. I know tsunami scuba on Camp Foster has awesome dive classes for cheap and the diving community out there is a good one. Sounds like I left the island right on time sorry to hear that they make it hard to experience the culture these days best of luck to you out there and in the future.

Pretty much. I honestly like the island, but the restrictions make everything suck. Seems like the longer I stay out here, the more they keep adding to the rules. I guess that's the price you pay for a few stupid Marines and Sailors. They do still offer the 30 day incentive if you decide to extend, though.

But I actually had lunch with the Wing CG a few weeks ago, and he mentioned that they want to make Marines who get stationed here stay a full enlistment. I guess units are complaining that they spend the 2 years out here training Marines to be proficient in their MOS and an asset to the unit, but right about the time that happens, they rotate out and in comes a new PFC or LCpl.

If you browse this site long enough you'll find a wealth of knowledge. If you've ever even thought about making an attempt at doing something bigger or better you'll never know if you're made for it until you try, and if you don't you'll spend your entire life regretting passing up the opportunity. One of my favorite recruiting posters is a picture of a Green Beret with the caption "Pick it up. We dare you."
