I am a 3 Star Marine Mom; two sons and a daughter serving right now. One in Infantry preparing for another tour to the sand box, one with 7th COMM in Okinawa and my daughter is finishing up C school for the Prowler at Whidbey Island and then on to Cherry Point for 4 yrs. I grew up Marine Corps, my father (dec.) was a Mustang; went up the ranks to MGSgt to 1st Lt during Vietnam. He was in Intelligence. I have worked civil service in Okinawa as the Command Liaison for all incoming and outgoing N/MC personnel at Camp Butler N/MC Family Services from 1991-1994.
Since my kids left home, I have been lost. So I took up running at 48 yrs old and now 49, I have completed 5, 10, 12 and two half marathons as early as last Sunday! I've never been an athlete, but my Marines have motivated me! They laugh and call me Moto Mom!
I am passionate about helping others and when my oldest Marine lost four Marines during his deployment in 2012, I felt compelled to honor them in some way. I learned about the Bataan Memorial Death March and decided to throw the idea around and here I am; rucking in a pair of Bates Lites Durashocks for the first time today! Damn my feet hurt! And this is where I need your help!
I am seeking any and all advice on rucking (light weight...maybe not even the 35; just my hydration pak, fuel, socks, etc...not sure yet) and caring for my feet! The local VFW and Flathead Marines have paid my travel expenses to make this a reality and now the pressure is on! I have 155 days to prepare myself! So throw it at me! I'm ready!

Welcome. For the rucking stuff there is lots of info here. Search for foot care, I made a pretty good informative thread that you could get a lot of info from.

Welcome, ma'am. Your feet will hurt initially no matter what boots you wear, but you MAY be better served with a pair of heavier-duty boots. I'm not saying you should go out and buy some brand new Danners or whatever, because the advantage may not be worth the cost to you, plus the break-in time if you go the 'brand new' route. I can say that after a couple years in the Marine Corps infantry and a "few" hikes with both Bates Lites and other boots, my feet typically hurt more after the movements with the Bates. That being said, the Bates ARE noticeably lighter and that might be a pro that you're looking for. I have no quantifying data or anything like that, just my $.02. Best of luck on the March, though if you've raised three Marines, you must be doing something right and sure don't need our best wishes. Semper Fi.

Welcome to SS. Good to see you here, and congratulations on becoming a running enthusiast. A warm thank you to your family, for such dedicated service in our military.
