Afternoon,

I am looking to mostly read and ask a few questions. I am active duty rated but not qualified awo. A couple years ago in a hospital after a motorcycle accident, I wrote down what i wanted to do with my life, and a letter to myself. I put it in a box, sealed it up and forgot about it. Now married and in the navy I am packing to move and found the box. After almost 5 years I opened it. Funny what I used to value. I read the letter and it simply said "Look in the mirror, are you happy with your life?" I started to evaluate what I am doing and how I can change it to look forward to the work everyday. The navy has had its ups and downs and like most who join any branch it isn't what they expect at first. I feel my place is in the military and I simply need to find the community I belong in. So I started looking and found this site. I have a waiver and had a surgery but it doesn't preclude me from being fit for full or a flight up chit. I pass my pfa's and am not a fat body. I had a surgery in the navy and have had a bit of a slow recovery. My heart is in the special warfare community But I am really not feeling aircrew. It is a great gig, great career with awesome civilian opportunities post enlistment but its not for me. It has been really easy enjoying the easy life. I haven't deployed but they are mostly to Japan and we stay in a lot of hotels and get a lot more special pays and treatment than others but my heart isn't in this. Its hard to explain to my buddies who are in the marines and army. I just don't think I will be happy till I am pushing myself everyday. I am interested in night stalkers but also looking at things along the lines of ranger and marsoc. Ultimately I have time to serve the navy before I can do much of anything but I am mostly on hear to understand an plan a potential switch. I know with my waiver and my surgery I wont have it easy moving to anything but I am willing to try.

Welcome.
What's an AWO?

It is an enlisted position that flies on a fixed wing plan like a P3 or P8 for maritime patrol, recon, and anti submarine warfare. I am a Non acoustic guy so i monitor radar and things like that inflight. The other side of an awo is acoustic and they monitor subsurface things like submarines.

Sounds like an interesting job.

That said, be the best AWO the Navy has. Your Fit Reps will go a long way in determining if you get selected for SWCC, BUDS, or another service's selection program.

Those Aircrew Hotels usually have a fitness center, use it; become a gym rat. Hotel living is a great way to gain weight.

See the sights, the navy (hopefully) gives enough time between missions that you can take in some of the local attractions.

Good luck.

Absolutely, I have every intention on making the most of it. I know I wont be happy till I am doing something more inline with SOAR or Para rescue. Just trying to figure out how to make it happen.

Welcome... I stated by military career as an AW. First on H-3's then later on P-3's. If you are even considering any type of SOF career get in shape NOW. The Navy (with the exception of SEALS) PT regimen is lame. Good luck in your endeavors.
