First, I would like to say hello to everyone, and thank you for what you all do.

I initially became interested in the Air Force and entered the delayed enlistment program in November of 2007. I had aspirations of becoming a PJ, but a motorcycle wreck hindered my ability during the PAST and I failed to meet standards. I shipped for basic in March of 2008 with a guaranteed job as an aircraft hydraulic systems specialist. I served two years at RAF Mildenhall with the 352nd maintaining MC-130H/P Talon IIs and Combat Shadows. After that I spent one year on Little Rock AFB maintaining slick C-130E/Hs. I applied for retraining at my three year mark, and was selected for Flight Engineer. During training I was selected, along with a fellow student, to become the first AC-130H Spectre Gunship FEs straight out of the school house, having the minimum hour requirement waived. I excelled in training and became fully qualified and mission ready in January of 2013. I deployed with the squadron in May of 2013, with only 79 flight hours. I spent just over 100 days in Afghanistan, accumulating 42 combat sorties and 225 combat hours. Those three months were an amazing time for me, and I supported some wonderful people. I was lucky enough to not lose anyone overhead, but did have one Army personnel receive a gunshot wound. He survived and we later were able to visit him in the hospital. I think it would be amazing if he or someone he knows frequents this website and could give me an update on his recovery. Anyway, I am still with the 16 SOS and hope to be with them till the end. After that I would like to get into the CSAR mission, or onto the U- Model gunship.

Welcome to Shadowspear! Thank you for your service.

Thanks for the welcome.

Also for anyone that knows, for the vetting process, what exactly would I "apply" for? I'm not kicking down doors, but not trying to sound like an ass, I don't think we would be considered simply SOF support. Maybe just plain old verified military?

Welcome to SS. Im stationed at Cannon, but currently deployed for a little longer. I heard they were shutting down the 16th ?

Yes and no. The 16th and the 73rd (W model gunship) will be merging soon. At first we will be operating as two seperate squadrons in the same building. Then once the last H model is gone, the 73rd will dissolve, and the 16th will absorb the Whiskey model, and continue it's existence as a gunship squadron. A lot of people are unhappy.

I see, I've been gone since December and have heard a few things have changed since then.

Welcome to SS.

I'll always remember stepping off the bird on my first mission very worried about what was to pass. I'll always remember the first sound I heard when everything got quiet, the sound of an AC-130 circling overhead. At that moment I felt at peace.

I'm glad we could provide that feeling for you. My first ever "combat mission" was orbiting over a SEAL team that had been out in the field for a few days. As soon as we checked in, he radioed back that him and his team were finally going to try and get some sleep for the first time in a few days. Sounds creepy, but we watched them sleep for 6 or 7 hours before they woke back up and went on their way. Never once did I think it was a waste of anybody's time.

Anyone have a guess as to why I'm getting puzzled looks walking around a Marine base?

My guesses are either my "long" Air Force haircut, or because I'm an enlisted guy lodged in the officer billeting. Haha.
