I'm going to go into some detail about myself and my current situation. My questions are in regards to what would better prepare me for attending a selection.

Brief bio
Currently an 0311, originally an 0321 contract. Sustained an injury during phase 3 of brc which rendered me incapable of finishing. Limited duty for 8 months. My provider recommended mos change to non-infantry, but I pulled some strings and got an 0311 spot. Finished a work up as a plt ro and occasional team leader. Now I currently hold a team leader billet.

Options
I'm slated to attend aic (use to be islc) following the deployment, and I will hold a squad leader position. However, my plt sgt has been prepping a package for me to attend a screener for the sta plt. He believes it would be a better fit and it would broaden my horizons. I'd like to go, however, I don't have enough time to get a school seat for ss, unless they send me during the work up (Which I know would never happen.) I feel like there are skills to be learned on both paths, but I don't know which would be more applicable to preparing myself for selection.

Also, should the sof group I choose to tryout for impact my current decision?

The STA indoc is about as close as you'll get to a selection program. However keep in mind it's only a few days long compared to a few weeks. Every battalion runs theirs differently, so you really don't know what you'll be tested on other than basic sniper knowledge and infantry skills(patrolling, land nav, etc.)

If you aren't the type who thinks they've climbed the mountain because you graduated ssbc, then STA will give you more than your average experience of a rifle platoon.

I am not SOF, just aspiring to be one so keep this in mind when viewing my post..
However, I made the same decision with my Marine Corps. carreer. I spent 4 years with an infantry unit, and two in STA.
STA plt helped me to stay focused and constantly improving myself as a Marine. FOR ME, it was much easier to become slightly complacent in a line unit than with STA... It took me studying my ass off with the knowledge, weapon systems, and range est as much as it took me PTing my ass off just to stay in the plt. I also was not given the opportunity to go to S/S school(no $)... but appearently I like to be on the very edge of a "special community" lol cuz i spent two years on the edge of s/s and am now on the edge of a very long line of proving myself to get into yet another awesome community.
Not to mention I was abe to go back and ask the HOGs that ran my indoc how I did and what areas I struggled on. They told me my weak points, they assessed my strong points. I can definately say it was the best place to spend my last two years. I enjoyed it. It challenged me, and helped me grow as a Marine and as a leader/follower.
This is just my opinion from my personal experience. If I am out of my lane, Im sure someone will let know
