Tonight started Season 4 of The Americans.

The daughter told Pastor Tim her secret. That’s gonna be his ass. PS: Pastor Tim comes across as a creepy child molester.

Martha has pretty accepted everything Phillip has said and done and now considers herself dedicated to Phillip’s cause…even though she has no idea what who he is or what he does.

Nina’s dumbass is going to get burned trying to play hardball with her Russian captors.

Phil got called out for fucking around with FBI dudes’s ex-wife.

One thing I love about this show is how nearly every episode is pretty much a season finale.

I really liked that show. It was not well-watched and had a cult-like following, but the critics loved it. The 80s and Reagan era were my formative years so I dug all the cultural references.

There have been some really good TV happening at the time, because it’s amazing to me that Keri Russell never won Emmy, nor the woman who played Martha.

Keri Russell is the future Mrs. Devil Doc if something happens to the current one. She just doesn't know it yet. Between that show and The Diplomat she has showcased her acting chops.

This a great summation of the whole show (spoiler alerts).


I had to google it because even I am that much of a nerd, but it won 29 awards out of 102 nominations.

I love cold war shows of that era. I have wanted to watch Deutschland series but I don't want to pay for it.
 
The Vow on Max/HBO about the NVXIM cult and trial. You might remember this news blurb from a few years ago about a cult that branded "sex slaves". Allison Mack from Smallville was the big draw in that story because she recruited women into the organization.

Like any good cult story this is bonkers. If you love cult stories, the 15-16 episodes over two seasons is for you.

The NVXIM cult was a rip off of Scientology in some respects even down to using the same terms and model of recruiting celebrities, CEOs, politicians, etc. The heiresses to the Seagrams fortune funded the organization, the Mexican chapter was fronted by the son of a former president of Mexico. I think every actor or actress from Vancouver was recruited. Stuff like that.

Predictably it went sideways when the founder after over a decade decided to create a "sorority" which amounted to an inner circle of women he co-opted/ coerced into sexual relationships, even soliciting blackmail from the victims. There's a 17YO involved, multiple families and mothers pimping their daughters and then claiming they didn't know, just gross. You can see his "logical" move from charming guru to dark, manipulative creep over the years as he ramped up his control.

The one negative is you can tell there are some folks who are the protagonists, the "good guys" who fought the cult and exposed its workings. I say this is a negative because these folks are clearly downplaying their roles and using the venue to distance themselves from their actions. "I was branded but never in the sex cult portion. I was an insider because I made the company so much money. All of those other women however..."

No stars here. You either like stories about cults and the dark side of humanity or you don't. The former should watch this and the latter will pass no matter what because the topic isn't interesting to them.
