On March 23rd, 2003 a pair of HH-60's scrambled from Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan. The mission was an urgent medevac needed to save the lives of two injured Afghani children. One of the helicopters crashed and all of it's crew was killed. The downed chopper was using the call sign "Komodo 11."
On board the downed HH-60 were Lt. Col. John Stein, aircraft commander, 1st Lt. Tamara Archuleta, co-pilot, Staff Sgt. Jason Hicks and Staff Sgt. John Teal flight engineers, and Master Sgt. Michael Maltz, and Senior Airman Jason Plite, pararescuemen. Archuleta, Hicks, Stein and Teal were assigned to the 41st Rescue Squadron. Maltz and Plite were assigned to the 38th RQS.
Let each of us remember these brave airmen who died “That Other’s May Live” while fighting in the war on terrorism. Remember also their families who have made incredible sacrifices with the loss of their loved ones. America is blessed to be protected by men and women like these heroes.

LtCol Stein was one of the finest pilots I ever flew with, Jason and John were both fairly low time FE guys who were the life of the party when we were hanging out and Mike was just a hoot to work with during AIE's, he pulled his retirement papers when the war kicked off. Unfortunaly I never got to know Tamera or the Pup PJ Jason but I've heard nothing but good things about them as well.
