CHICOPEE, MA — First Sergeant Kevin A. Dupont, 52, died June 17, 2009, with his wife Lisa by his side, at Brooke Army Medical Center, in San Antonio, from wounds he suffered March 8, 2009, while conducting a combat patrol mission when an Improvised Explosive Device struck the vehicle he was traveling in.

Kevin was in eastern Afghan Khowst-Gardez Pass while serving with the 1st Brigade, 203rd Corps, Afghan National Army Embedded Training Team.
He was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in August 2008 as a two member unit to support the Afghanistan Regional Security Integration Command, Combined Joint Task Force Phoenix-Afghanistan.

1st Sgt. Dupont was born in Holyoke and was raised in Chicopee. He graduated from Chicopee High School in 1976. Upon graduation, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps as a rifleman and was trained as a sniper. During his six years active duty with the Corps, he spent two years on the Naval Aircraft Carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) and at Camp Lejeune, N.C., and Camp Pendelton, Calif. He then joined the Massachusetts Army National Guard in March of 1984 as an infantryman and served in various positions.

1st Sgt. Dupont worked full time for the Mass. Army National Guard Counter Drug Program in Milford since 1992. His multiple duties included the senior airborne narcotics eradication observer and a senior intelligence analyst. His highest military education was the advanced non commissioned officer course and he had countless professional development courses relating to his part time duties as an infantryman and his full time duties in support of local law enforcement with the Counter Drug Program.

Kevin graduated from the West Boylston Academy for the Massachusetts Police Training Committee in 2008. He was also active with the Templeton Police Department's Regulation Enforcement Anti Crime Task Force. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, the Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, three Army Commendation medals, five Army Achievement medals, two Marine Corps Good Conduct medals, seven Army Reserve Components Achievement medals, two National Defense Service medals, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Armed Forces Service Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal and the NATO Medal.

1st Sgt. Dupont was recently promoted to first sergeant of headquarters and headquarters troop, 1st squadron, 182nd Calvary Regiment.

He is survived by his wife, Lisa Murawski-Dupont of Templeton; his parents, Herbert and Gwendolyn Dupont of Chicopee; two brothers, Mark Dupont and his wife Susan of North Easton and Christopher Dupont and his wife Tracy of Belchertown; two sisters, Kelli Dupont of North Hampton, N.H., and Jodi McVane and her husband David of Mansfield; his father-in-law, William Murawski; mother-in-law, Sharon Holliday; and two sisters-in-law, Julie Barbato and Laurie Mathews, all of the South Shore; along with several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held Friday, June 26, 2009, at 10 a.m., from Holy Name of Jesus Church, 33 South St., Chicopee, with burial to follow in Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. Calling hours will be held Thursday, June 25, 2009, from the Chicopee High School Auditorium, 820 Front St., Chicopee, from 1 to 8 P.M.
