Hello members, I am calling on all SOF Support personnel to tell me, if they want of course. To tell me what they do as SOF Support I am looking into some or whatever positions I can find on the reserve side I have 19th and 20th SFG out by my location. I always up for learning new jobs and would like to hear what others have done so maybe I can learn more. I thank you all in advance for any comments that come in.

That's a very broad question. What to SOF support personnel do? We enable SOF operations through direct and remote operations in fields ranging from finance, to intelligence, to transportation, to logistics, and more. You're better off researching what jobs you'd be interested in and asking directly about those instead of casting so wide a net.

I understand I was just curious on what others have done. I am thinking of continuing the 91B path but depending on what the unit needs I am always willing to learn something new to achieve this goal of mine for SOF Support.

1. What's your rank?
2. The unit will need open slots for you. This is easier if you are an E-5 or below.
3. You may have to reclass because of #2. Are you willing to go away for another AIT? It may be necessary.
4. Don't think for a second you're a shooter or that you should have the cool gear or whatever. I've seen far too many support guys think they should go out and shoot as a way of supporting the ODA's. False. Your MOS is your job, anything else is gravy.
5. Can you obtain a SECRET clearance?
6. How far are you willing to travel? The closest Sup. Company or Group Sup companies are WV, FL, KY, and Alabama. You'll have to sign a mileage waiver, travel on your own dime, and don't for a second think you can be late just because you had a 6-8 hour drive or late flight.

I am CPL about to be SGT and I am willing to re-class or do another AIT I know about the WV unit and have already contacted a SF recruiter in that state. I understand about the shooting but I do expect to do some kind of training that I don't get to do now. I understand the mileage waiver.

Expect that the training won't occur (minus jump school) and be pleasantly surprised when it happens. Money's drying up and the ODA's/ ODB's will always take priority over Support. At worst you'll be a second class citizen and at best you aren't a priority. It sucks but I've seen it (probably everyone in SF has seen it) and it is a Special Forces unit. The last part may seem brainless but Support guys tend to forget it or think they are on equal terms with the teams.

Bottom line: prepare to sacrifice with little in return. It happens. I was (and still am) immensely proud of my unit patch, my beret, and SF's heritage even if I wasn't SF. The men I worked with were like family. I was there once, 15 years ago, but some things never change.

It really sounds like the unit I am in now. But if I get it being apart of a unit like that I can only imagine to feel worth the sacrifice. That you for your help.
