My name is Clay, I've been looking at some of the threads on here already and doing a little bit of research on jobs that the Army has to offer. Ultimately, the goal is Ranger. It's what my heart is set on. I've been taking things one step at a time so I started out overweight at 265lbs, seven months later I hit tape at 210. Passed both my PICAT and confirmation test with a 71% and a gt score of 112. I havent gone to meps yet because I have been wanting to wait on an 11x option 40 contract, my recruiter thinks I should just go ahead and jump into 13f because he thinks my score "might" be wasted on just infantry (not sure if I want to keep waiting for it, I'm sure I'll get ranger eventually, I just figured the guaranteed chance at it would help.) Anyways, currently a factory worker biding my time and getting in shape to achieve said goal.

He's biased on infantry I think. I dont know why he doesnt like them. It's possible he just doesnt want me to wait an unknown amount of time for the option 40 so he can get rid of me.

No worries, I've scored higher than you and served with too many people who are way smarter than you or me, for me to care. I just thought the comments were funny.

Welcome. It is on you to research each MOS thoroughly and make a decision based on what you genuinely want to do, whether you make it into Regiment or not. Best of luck, from some one who is JUST Infantry.

Most recruiters think a recruit is "wasted" on anything that's not an MOS quota of theirs. Do what you want to do. I served an Infantry branch detail and feel like my career was better off for it. If you want Ranger, get it in your contract now. It's a lot harder than people think to get into certain units, jobs, or career fields later in one's career. Life, and the Army, have a habit of getting in the way.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do, and congratulations on your choice to serve.

I really hate that my initial comment made it seem like I think less of infantry. I dont think of it as "just" infantry, because It's been the mos I thought I'd always go into. I didn't even know forward observers/fisters were a thing until last week. All I know is that I for sure want to blow shit up, shoot cool guns, and get the hell out of my backwater hometown that noone leaves. Not much is keeping me here and I want something to be proud of for the rest of my life.

Early in my career, my infantry company's "white cycle" mission was funeral details support. As the lieutenant, one of my jobs was to interface with the family before and after the ceremonies and burial. Almost every time, someone came up to me to tell me how much they loved being in the <insert branch of service here>. No one ever told me "I was in the military and hated it and wish I never served."

I hope you have a good experience during your time in uniform.

I feel more confident in my decision after reading this, so thank you. I initially set out to be an 11x option 40, I researched the hell out of that and I shouldn't veer off that path because I'm told a good option is here now.

I think that's smart. At the same time, you don't know what you don't know. If there is something you think you might be better suited for, don't be afraid to make the change. Just don't do it because your recruiter has a quota to fill. There are literally hundreds of jobs in the Army and all of them are important. Find one that makes you happy.

I'm still doing research. And from my job description I'd be embedded with infantry as a 13f. The contract available has airborne attached but no option 40. I agreed to reserve that job last friday so that I could go to meps this thursday-friday. Is it even possible to change it if I wanted to?

I love this thread. My scores qualified me for every position the Corps had to offer and I told them it was infantry or nothing. It was my choice not theirs.

To this very day...I wear the title "Grunt" with pride only seconded to that of "Dad."

It sounds to me like your settling for 13F when you really want 11X. I did something similar and I can tell you that I regretted it every day. I Wanted 11x when I enlisted, but decided to go with 68w to appease other people. If you want 11x option 40, then hold out for that. It will appear eventually. This is going to be your life for the next 4 (at least) years.

As for your question about switching mos at MEPS, you can definitely do that. The Army doesn't own you until you leave for Basic training. I initially agreed to do EOD, and when I got to MEPS I switched to 68W. Your recruiter can check before you even go, if what you want isn't available then don't go. Don't let him determine your future, you're the one who has to live with the decision, not him. Don't let him pressure you!
