Hello,

I'm a teacher in Northern CA. We have friends who serve in different capacities.

Recently I've become sucked into the various reality shows of different service people filmed in action, and have since bought the popular books about SEAL men in action.

Whether or not those books and shows are good or bad, they have really opened my eyes to something I never wanted to know, because I was afraid to hear the bad things. Now that I am more informed I am greatful and beyond thankful for all of what has been sacrificed.

If there are any organizations that my 4th grade class can reach out to, letters care packages, etc I would love to know.

God Bless,
Erin

Welcome.

For the most part, the films of men in action, regardless of military branch, is misinformation.
As xSF stated, true personal accounts can be w/in reach at the VA and other military organizations. There are veterans shuttered in VA hospitals because the public never wanted to know. These vets will give you and your class a perspective that celluloid can not.

Erin, welcome and thank you.
I'm heartened to read your post.

You could also reach out to your local VFW or American Legion, they'll have resources/places for the kids to send letters etc...

I took a few photos of letters young kids sent to me when I was in Afghanistan, I was truly touched by them.

So now you have me wondering. I certainly don't watch military films because they are boring documentaries with professors talking in front of bookshelves. The last one I actually watched was in High School and I hope they still show it. WW2 where you see the Jews in internment camps and the horrible mass graves, haunted me but it is absolutely necessary.

The shows I'm watching are Eyewitness War
Inside Combat Rescue

I know nothing can really explain or come close to the reality of any of what you all do, but after watching those I feel like I need to know more.

Like there is this dark side to life that is equally as beautiful as the one that we live as civilians, and that raw experience is a necessary balance in order to truly understand the beauty of being alive.

Anyway, thank you!!
