The Afghanistan and Pakistan Thread

Wait, Blue on Blue violence that killed dozens of Americans was so pervasive commanders created their own ad hoc PSD's to protect them and their troops. So frequent it was often reported on in numerous mainstream sources, to say nothing of folks like us. People find it shocking Afghans would come to this country and want to kill us?

Anyone who is shocked or surprised? Shut the fuck up, moron.

I think this country would like to do anything but learn from that war. Anything.

Well we could learn, but the lesson might sound America first, or promote ethno-hatred, or that all religions and political outlooks can not be treated the same. IDK...

The Donahue promotion hold up is interesting, a lot folks STANNING for him on twitter. Some talking about deploying his corps HQ as something heroic rather than rotational. But doing his best to coordinate the joint force in Afghanistan deserves some credit. However, if he's been found to be one who pushes liberal polices he can retire.

There are a lot of folks that should have been held accountable for the tragedy of Afghanistan. In another time a cabinet members might have removed themselves from office, to die on their figurative and proverbial sword. But no, Lloyd and Anthony are gonna get those pensions.

I keep hearing it was a "state" mission. But State does not have operational control of the Army, so those orders filtered through Lloyd to the combatant command (CentCom).

People have resigned in protest over a fucked up POTUS decision. Austin could have done that.

Members, if not all, of the Joint Chiefs later expressed regret for not resigning over Vietnam. At the time they thought remaining in uniform would allow them to influence policy, but it didn't work out like that.

Years later, here we are. Nothing's changed. Nothing's learned, but I don't think this crop of generals cares to learn anything. They want consulting gigs, board of directors appointments, and book deals. Failure is because of other people in their eyes.

Agree.

No one of significance resigns after major failures in the national security apparatus. Not on their own, anyway. They're all afraid of being outside the inner ring.

Change it from the inside? LOL. That's the excuse they always use. You don't change Washington, Washington changes you. You want to make a change? Find a way to be a martyr. Other than that, as a military officer, unless you're willing to... I don't know actively undermine a sitting president by having backdoor comms with our chief competitor or something, you're not influencing shit. And the moment you step away, there will be someone equally capable (or incapable) at your job as you are. The arrogance of "I'm too important to do right morally."

I put in my papers after the way Afghanistan ended. That wasn't the only reason, but it was the final one. I know I wasn't the only one to do that. There could have been GOs who did so as well, but I don't know of any. And certainly no one from the uppermost levels, like the SECDEF. There is no way I could look myself in the mirror, or my troops' faces, every day if I had a major hand in the Afghanistan debacle and didn't say "I'm out."

Milley and the Vindmans? Put them in chains! Oh Vindman's wife too while we're at it.

These are the same senior leaders that DESTROY those under their commands for FAR lesser discretions.
...and their bullshit is always the same:

-wait until they are able to retire with ALL of their bennies
-put their toe in the water to test public opinion
-give an interview that bashes "somebody else" for the failure
-state regret that they didn't do something sooner
-bank their consulting fees

MOTHER.FUCK.THESE.ENTITLED.PRICKS.

That being said, their BS produced disgruntled young officers like Stormin' Norman and Colin Powell, who stuck it out and, IMO, made a huge difference.
