Trying switch from Guard to Active

@Kasrkin, I just graduated the Q (but still in Language), so I can provide a little insight. I'll preface this by saying that I am in the NG, and I have started looking into switching to AD.

First I'll say that you are getting a bit ahead of yourself. If you pass your SFRE, then talk to the Cadre about how your unit feels about AD ascensions. You are kind of screwing them if they send you to the Q, and you have no intention of staying with that unit.

In order to switch over you need a conditional release signed by the Group Cmdr and the state TAG. If you can get that signed, it's pretty easy to switch from NG to AD while you're still in SWCS. Getting your unit to release you is the crux of the issue. NG SF units usually fall into 3 camps:
1-they are fine releasing you and sign off relatively pain free.
2-they want at least one combat deployment out of you before they will release you.
3-they want at least two years out of you before they will release you.

At the end of the day, the needs of the Regiment is what matters. If you want a guarantee to be active, get an 18X contract. If you go through the Guard, be prepared to fulfill your obligation to them.

I'll kindly disagree with the easy part. Regardless of branch or if you're tying to be special forces being labeled prior service makes the process difficult. You have to find a recruiter that will even talk to you. There is no quota for prior service and the high school kids take priority. I walked this path, nothing about it was easy.

There is a recruiter here on Bragg who specializes in NG to AD ascensions for guys in the Q / new graduates. It may not have been easy in your circumstances, but it's not very hard for guys in my shoes if you can get a conditional release signed.
