U.S. Marine from Minnesota shot to death in his D.C. barracks.

Horrible. Curious as to what built up to the incident. Third fatality due to negligence?

That's terrible. Do Marines keep their service rifles with them in barracks?

Generally, no service member keeps weapons in their barracks room. The term Marine Barracks in this case is a proper name for Marine Barracks Washington D.C, not a barracks in the way you’re thinking. The Barracks is one of the oldest posts in the Corps (maybe the oldest?). The Marines assigned there are charged with armed duties. They sign out and carry loaded weapons.

This is the second shooting at Marine Barracks 8th and I within recent months. I suspect this one will hit the books as a negligent discharge.

Sounds as though at least one of the other two were negligent discharges as well.

This is a local story; the coverage is heavy. Sure it’s every parents nightmare, but who prepares for “the knock” when your kid is not deployed, but stationed in DC?

But a knock at the family’s home Tuesday in Karlstad brought Markelle Kuznia the news every military parent dreads. She opened the door to a pair of Marines who told her that Lance Cpl. Riley S. Kuznia had been shot and killed while on duty at the Marine Barracks in Washington, D.C.

Childhood dream turns to nightmare: Marine from Minnesota shot dead in barracks

Horrible, just devastating. With regard to discipline, I can't think of a place more unlikely to have an accidental live round discharge than Marine Barracks Washington DC.
