hello all!
i've been reading from this site for a while and its been crucial in my informed decision making process. i am currently a 19d cav scout, in the 82nd abn. i've been in the army for 4 years and deployed twice; once to haiti and once to iraq. when i got back from iraq i went to sfas and got selected. but while in the q course i got med dropped due to an injury. now i'm back in the 82nd working in an s3 shop and hating life. i never really realized how much i dislike the 82nd until i was in the q. i'm just here on this site to get some advice on pathways out of the conventional army, and possibly look into the mentor program. thanks in advanced for all the help guys and maybe you'll hear from me in the forums.

Hey Airborne. So, you hate the division because you attended the Q course? What do you hate about it? I am having a difficult time grasping that brother. Don't take this side ways. Just wondering...And if you're wondering. I was 2/325 A.I.R., 82nd., "95-99". AATW.

Firemedic... you have to understand that I am in the 82nd airborne infantry division as a cavalry scout, I do not get so much love here. Now I'm sure that if I was to pcs to a cavalry division things would be different. For example, we end up with the same taskings with our 14-20 man platoons as an average infantry platoon that's about 40 guys. Life gets rough here on Bragg for a cavalryman. Even if you're in 1-38 cav where their charlie troop is lrs infantrymen and their alpha and bravo ends up pulling some screenline for hours on end while the lrs guys actually do recon. Don't get me wrong I love jumping out of planes, and I love all the opportunities for schools, but the 82nd life just isn't for me.

Welcome.
What was the injury? Did it heal? Why don't you go back and try again if you liked it so much and want out of the 82nd?

I'm still in physical therapy and currently on a no ruck no airborne ops profile. They say it was severe tearing on my IT band, and I've been on this profile since about Feburary. Runnings not too bad but rucking can be bad at times. I really wish i could make it back to the q course but probably by the time I'm all healed up I'll have to go back to sfas. So right now I'm trying to reclass just to get out of the 82nd, possibly I might switch over to 35 series.

OK, good luck with the recovery.

Welcome. Sounds like you are limited in all of your options till you get healed up. What is your recovery time? Are you going to be able to ruck? If so, why not just go back to SFAS? 35ps in tactical SIGINT roles carry very heavy rucks at times. What are you going to do if you go 35 series but then end right back up at 82nd? 1-2plus years is a long time to spend training just to end right back where you say it sucks. If that's a likely scenario then why not just reclass into 11series? You say the grass is greener there.

There's a lot to consider.

Some hard truth:

- If you're running to leave the 82nd, chances are you may not like where you end up. You went Intel and then drew a bad assignment? Frying pan to the fire, eh?
- You're injured. You're expected to fully recover? I hope so, but what if you don't? See the above. You want go do xxxxx awesome job, but you're hurt? Welcome to a basement fling TPS reports. It happens.

My thoughts, take them as you see fit:

1) Look at jobs with the understanding that you could wind up back in the 82nd or...(shudder) some place like Hood or Stewart.
2) You want to go SOF, but if you're hurt? See the above.
3) In your boat you need a Plan B or even a C. You go SIGINT, manage to land a SOT-A slot, and you're injured? Back to square one, eh? No high speed job for you.
4) You can't live in fear of being broken, but your primary motivation to leave the 82nd is...the 82nd.

You're stuck with:
A) With your shield or upon it. Make or break into SOF.
B) Find something where you'll be happy with any base you're assigned to.
C) Make a change, put your time in if A and B don't work out, and MAYBE use those skills on the outside.

I don't begrudge your desire to punch put of the 82nd, lots of folks feel the same about it or other assignments, but you need to understand the psychological ledge you're walking upon. You've painted yourself into a corner if your injury doesn't heal well enough to go into SOF.

KUDOS in that you've maintained your SA through several "hard truth" criticisms.

As you can see there is a wealth of experience here dealing with exactly what you're going through. Know that ONLY YOU can make the long-term decision. Make it one that you can live with and not hold regrets.
