I think he avoided it mostly because he retired in 2006, and he didn't have many movies after the 80s that have stuck around culturally. As weird as it is, The rock is probably the last role most people remember him in.

I am old enough to remember Jimmy Carter being president while I was in grade school and Ronald Reagan as I entered towards junior high.
I miss him and the ideals he convinced me to believe in.
