FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (USASOC News Service, April 9, 2010) – Night Stalkers from a single battalion earned both the 2010 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) Non-Commissioned Officer and Soldier of the Year titles.
Staff Sgt. Jacob M. Barner, a section sergeant in his company’s armament shop, was named NCO of the Year; and Pfc. Lawrence E. Schores, a helicopter repairer, was named Soldier of the Year. Both serve with 1st Bn., 160th SOAR(A).
This was Barner’s second consecutive NCO of the Year title and Schores competed with about a year of Army service.
“The close results this year proved the level of commitment and skill each of you brings to our organization and the Army,” said Regiment Command Sgt. Maj. David L. Leamon. “It was obvious why each of you were sent to represent your units in this competition and you represented them extremely well.”
The competition tests the entire Soldier, Leamon explained. Each event is designed to test a different skill set, requiring Soldiers to be proficient in multiple tasks – not just their specialty.
Barner said that refining his skills for the competition had and will further enable him to teach his Soldiers basic and advanced Warrior tasks.
“I believe that's the bottom line of these competitions: to produce more proficient Soldiers and NCOs that will better the Army's force by providing a competitive spirit that boosts Esprit De Corps,” he said.
Soldiers were evaluated in multiple events including a physical fitness test, day and night land navigation and weapons qualification. Warrior tasks included radio operation, chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear gear, first aid and intelligence reporting. The mystery event, which remained unknown to participants until the challenge, was a level one Army combatives evaluation.
Each Night Stalker also took a written exam, wrote an essay and participated in an oral board with the regiment’s sergeants major.
Barner and Schores will represent the Night Stalkers in the U.S. Army Special Operations Command level competition this June.
