Two U.S. service members participating in the African Lion joint military exercises were reported missing near the city of Tan Tan in southern Morocco, U.S. Africa Command and the Moroccan Royal Armed Forces said on Sunday.

The Moroccan army said the service members went missing near a cliff.

Hope this has a happy ending.

CASABLANCA, Morocco (AP) — The remains of a U.S. soldier who went missing during military exercises in Morocco a week ago were recovered in the Atlantic Ocean, the army said Sunday. Military teams were still searching for a second missing soldier.

The remains were those of 1st Lt. Kendrick Lamont Key Jr., a 14A Air Defense Artillery officer who was one of two U.S. soldiers who fell off a cliff during a recreational hike in Morocco while off duty. He was 27 years old.

Ever since the story broke, I’ve been visualizing the “oh shit“ moment that moved up the chain of command as leadership reported two members not calling “here“ during roll call.

Especially an officer. They are so risk adverse and career conscious (or of the opinions of others) that for one to turn up missing probably kicked off some alarms. Let's be honest, we expect Joe to do something dumb, but we don't expect LT's to go out and be stupid on a pass/ R&R.

ADA is also a weird culture. Our ADA guys would call it Another Damn Army or A Different Army because the culture was just...different. They never elaborated on the details beyond having autonomy not always found in other units.
