My dad almost whooped me when he heard my mom got upset and thought she was yelling at me. She was actually yelling at the TV directly at Bill Buckner for what he did. She never swore unless she was watching baseball and the team she was rooting for was the Red Sox...or at me for being a putz, haha.
Everyone and I mean everyone in that state and all of New England had hated him afterwards. Mets fans were happy though!

I am a big baseball fan and remember that clearly. Ironically, Bill Buckner was a big part of the reason the Red Sox were there. He was a good player and had a great year. After a fantastic career, that one moment defined him for the rest of his life until he died a few years ago.

They saw what they wanted to see. As a former player and fan myself the only way we argued that this could happen was that his glove was too broken in and folded where it was supposed to catch at the web and physics happened.

Buckner was older and had really bad ankles and knees, and was a former outfielder. He was not the best defensive first baseman, but he could hit and drive in runs. Shit happens and players make errors, but that was the worst time to drop the ball (literally).

It's all water underneath the bridge to me. I never took it personally but cannot say the same with the rest of the fanbase still alive or now dead. But yeah, it was the worst of times to have it happen. However that glove being too soft is what caused it, I am 99% certain it was oiled one too many times.
