I’m really surprised to not have seen any discussion about this yet. Can someone other than ChatGPT please help me understand why scientists are so obsessed with this thing and why others are trying to convince me that it is the Mothership?

It's an interstellar comet, specifically the 3rd one we've ever observed. Hence the "3I" in the name.

This article gets into a bit of why it's so important, but the tldr is it lets scientists get an idea of how other solar systems formed, based on the composition of the comet We've only managed to track the 1st one in 2017, so this is a very new area of research.

The alien idea comes from the fact that interstellar objects have been thrown from their solar orbit of origin, so something had to have gave them inertia to overcome that gravitational pull.

Why? Because “anything we don’t immediately understand” automatically means “ALIENS!!!!” And that’s super exciting.

It's not outside of the realm of reality given the entirety of the universe that if we were able to slingshot Voyagers out into the nothing, that natural circumstances could provide similar conditions elsewhere to provide the yeetage.

Of course, that's as rare a set of circumstances as our own evolution, but yet... here we are.
